Everything i read on the hardie site states that trim must be applied first then the siding cut to but against it with caulking. If we installed the trim after the siding we would have had to caulk a ton to fill in for the different levels the layered siding creates. Scrape the side of the window trim next to the siding and the immediate edge of the lap siding with a paint scraper to remove old caulk and loose paint.
