Top Window Slides Down

The balance shoe in found within the outer frame of the window and the tilt pin that needs to fit into the shoe is attached to the bottom of the window sash.

Each double hung window in your home has four balance cartridges two per jamb liner. Heat and ac escapes and bugs can get in. If one of the balance shoes inside isn t working properly the sash will slide down when you attempt to raise it. Slide the balance friction spring between the window frame and window.

To adjust a disconnected balance shoe follow these steps. A lot of the times the coil springs balancing the window need adjustment to make it tighter but sometimes they have not been shimmed correctly at the middle of the windows. A dropped window is an indicator of a bad disconnected or misplaced balance shoe. About 10 years ago i had all the windows in my apartment replaced.

This can result in the window sash dropping or sliding down when you raise it. Slide the window down so you can access the top of it. Four or five years later when i would open them to insert a fan or an air conditioner the top window would slide down 6 12 inches in a few of the windows. One of the common problems associated with double hung windows is a dropped window or when one of the sashes becomes disconnected from a balance shoe.

When the top slash slides down the top of the window is left open. The top tab of the spring should sit on the top of the window jamb.
